The Gozo Regional Development Authority (GRDA) has recently launched a new 10-year regional development strategy for Gozo, which has been welcomed by the Għal Għawdex forum. The strategy’s opening theme, ‘An Island of Villages’, emphasizes the importance of preserving and promoting Gozo’s distinctive physical and social characteristics as part of its heritage and identity.
However, the forum expresses concern about the gap between strategic planning and actual implementation, highlighting the need for political will and long-term vision.
Sensible Use of Land and Natural Environment: The island’s built and natural environments are under pressure due to uncontrolled construction, negatively impacting villages, rural landscapes, and the overall aesthetic appeal.
Aligning Economic Growth with Well-being: Gozo’s economy relies heavily on sectors like construction, which are not sustainable in the long term. The forum advocates for economic models that prioritize well-being and quality of life for residents.
Enhancing Gozo’s Identity: The unique charm, authenticity, and natural beauty of Gozo are at risk due to intensive development, leading to a loss of competitive edge compared to other Mediterranean destinations.
The forum believes that real reform is necessary in these areas. While supporting economic growth, it advocates for the renovation and restoration of traditional buildings and new developments that align with the island’s strategic and economic goals, enhancing rather than detracting from its beauty.
