Xħajma Racetrack: A Premier Destination for Equestrian Enthusiasts in Gozo

Located in Xewkija, the Xħajma Racetrack is the only horse race track on the island, offering an essential space for both training and racing. Stretching over approximately 1km, this racetrack serves as a key venue for equestrian activities, playing a vital role in maintaining the local horse racing tradition. To ensure optimal training conditions year-round, the racetrack is open daily from 5:30 am to 7:30 pm during the winter months, and from 5:30 am to 8:00 pm in the summer.

A Variety of Races: Traditional and Modern Competitions

In Gozo, horse racing takes on a unique style, reminiscent of Roman chariot racing, where riders compete from a two-wheeled cart (known as a gig) drawn by a horse. The Gozo Horse Racing Association organizes regular races and special events, each featuring a detailed race card that outlines the day’s full schedule. Races typically occur every other weekend, but the calendar also includes highly anticipated events like the Arka Races, Bailey’s Heats, Kraft Heats, Gozo Sports Festival, and World Children’s Day celebrations.

The association holds a wide array of races, catering to various categories, including races for Shetland Ponies, different types of ponies, and Trott events. The Trott races are divided into five levels: Trott Premier, Trott Gold, Trott Silver, Trott Bronze, and Trott Copper. Special competitions such as the President’s Cup and Local Council Cup also feature on the event calendar.

Bringing Equestrian Sports to New Heights

Aiming to elevate horse racing in Gozo, the Gozo Horse Racing Association also offers training and educational courses to riders and enthusiasts. This initiative not only nurtures the skills of local participants but also contributes to the overall development of the sport on the island.

A Racetrack for All: Fun for Locals and Visitors Alike

The Xħajma Racetrack isn’t just for experienced riders—it’s a welcoming space for everyone, whether local or international. The Gozo Horse Racing Association invites families, visitors, and equestrian fans to come enjoy the exciting races and the vibrant atmosphere at the track. Its annual events also include activities for children, athletics enthusiasts, and even motoring and bocce players, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
